On September 13, content creator Lucie Fink and her husband Michael welcomed their second child, baby daughter Colette (aka Coco!). And Lucie’s toddler Milo, now 2 and a half, became a big brother.
Life as a family of four is just getting underway, but in the midst of all the transitions, Fink, one of our Generation Next parents, is open about the good—and hard—parts of becoming a mama. “In the early days of parenting, the hardest part for me was figuring out who I am now that I'm a mom,” Fink recalls. “[Before Milo was born,] I was really wrapped up in my identity as a business owner who was galavanting around New York City and having fun with my husband. And then having a baby your whole life changes and your freedom kind of goes out the door for a hot second. You can't just go out to a coffee shop on a whim and meet a friend and that was really hard for me to figure out. Now two and a half years in, I feel so settled in this role. But it's not immediate that you can accept all the big changes.”
Nanit has played a big role in easing Fink’s family through those changes, helping them set up routines and establish boundaries that allow everyone the structure and sleep they need.
“From the start, sleep training and just figuring out sleep schedules were probably the thing I was the most obsessed with,” says Fink. “Having Nanit as a tool to be able to see all the data, the insights, the night summaries…I cannot emphasize enough how much we used that data when we were working on sleep schedules. It was the number one thing that helped us get our lives in order as a new family.”
With Milo, Fink appreciates how Nanit helps her stay connected even when she can’t literally be present.
“We’ve been using Nanit for so long now that we’ve started to use it differently.
In the beginning we were using it for those metrics—how many hours did Milo sleep, the wake windows and timing feeds. But over time it’s become more of a visual tool for us, as well as letting us stay in touch with what's happening with Milo, even when Michael and I aren't home. We open the Nanit App when Milo’s with other people and see what he's up to, check when he went to bed…. It’s just been an incredible tool to have at our fingertips literally.”
And now with the arrival of Coco, Fink is looking forward to tapping into the advantages of even more Nanit features to stay on top of important details, share the caregiving responsibilities that have suddenly doubled, and level up their parenting game.
“I’m so excited to use Nanit Care Logs with our second,” Fink says. “They consolidate everything in one place, so we can use Nanit for checking sleep, but then I can also track feeds, diaper changes, and night time visits within the app. I know it's going to make our lives 20 times easier. I’m also really excited for the Split Screen feature. How cool that you can see both your kids at once."
Fink is also finding that being a mom to two comes with its own kind of peace and grace. “Because Milo was my first, every little hiccup—whether it was a regression or a temperamental or behavioral change—my brain went to, This is permanent, this is forever! And really pigeon-holing him into these boxes. But then the next week he’d change again. So with Coco, as she grows, I'm going to be able to let go a lot more easily of making judgments about who she is at any point in the process. I’ll be able to be comfortable [in the knowledge that] she's changing every day.”
In our exclusive Generation Next video series, Fink shares about her ever-evolving role as a mom and an entrepreneur, the insights she’s learning, and how Nanit’s wide-ranging features support her family as it grows.
